Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses in humans, ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that emerged in late 2019 is caused by a new strain of coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. The origins of this virus are still being investigated, but it is believed that it originated in bats and was transmitted to humans through an intermediate animal host, possibly a pangolin.
The first cases of COVID-19 were identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and the disease has since spread globally, becoming a pandemic. Scientists and public health officials around the world have been working to understand the virus and to develop effective treatments and vaccines to combat it
